LONGEVITY TIPS
- When possible, try to use neoprene belts as a
protection against belt rot. Neoprene is a synthetic rubber that is
resistant to damage caused by grease and oils.
- Never install a new belt by trying to stretch it
over a pulley using a screwdriver or similar tool. Always loosen the
component first. Extreme stress at one point of a belt will weaken the inner
reinforcement cords and cause the belt to fail early.
- Retighten a new belt after a few hundred miles of
driving since it will stretch slightly. A new belt becomes "used"
after only 10 minutes of operation.
- Be careful not to mistake a loose drive belt for a
faulty accessory component. Often times, malfunctioning components can
be corrected by tightening a drive belt. Do not replace components
unnecessarily when a belt tension adjustment would suffice.
